Turning Grief into Something Beautiful

Memorial Ashes Sculptures in Scotland

Gary Fitzwater — 3D Scotsman Studio·

Grief does not follow a schedule. It arrives when it wants, stays as long as it needs, and leaves behind a space that nothing quite fills.

What many people find, though, is that having something tangible — something they can see and touch — helps. Not to replace the person or pet they have lost, but to keep them present. To give the grief somewhere to rest.

That is what a memorial ashes sculpture does. And it is one of the most meaningful commissions I take on at 3D Scotsman Studio.

What Is a Memorial Ashes Sculpture?

A memorial ashes sculpture is a bespoke, 3D printed piece — designed around your loved one — with a discreet, sealed compartment built into the base or body of the sculpture to hold a portion of their ashes. It is not an urn in the traditional sense. It is a piece of art. Something that sits on a shelf or a mantelpiece and tells a story — the story of the person or pet it represents — rather than simply containing remains.

Why Families Are Choosing Memorial Sculptures

Traditional urns serve a purpose, but they are not always what people want. Many families find that a standard urn feels clinical, impersonal, or simply does not reflect the person they are remembering. A memorial sculpture is personal — it looks like them, or represents something that was uniquely theirs. It is beautiful, designed to be displayed. It invites people to ask about it, keeping the memory alive in conversation as well as in the home.

How the Process Works

Everything starts with a conversation. You can reach me by email or through the contact form. There is no pressure and no commitment at this stage. Once we have agreed on a direction, I create a 3D design for your review. You will see exactly what the sculpture will look like before anything is printed. We go back and forth until you are completely happy. I will never move to printing until you have given your approval.

The Ashes Compartment

The compartment is built into the base or body of the sculpture during the design phase. It is sized to hold a meaningful portion of ashes — typically a few tablespoons — rather than the full volume of remains. Many families choose to keep the majority of ashes in a separate urn and place a portion in the sculpture. Once the ashes are placed inside, the compartment is sealed permanently and discreetly.

Memorial Sculptures for Pets

A significant proportion of the memorial commissions I receive are for pets. The bond between a person and their animal is real and profound. Losing a pet is a genuine bereavement — and it deserves to be treated as one. A pet memorial sculpture gives you a way to honour that bond. I work from your photos to create a lifelike portrait of your dog, cat, rabbit, horse, or any other animal.

A Note on Sensitivity

I want to say something directly: I approach every memorial commission with the care and sensitivity it deserves. I am a neurodivergent artist, and one of the things that comes with that is a deep capacity for empathy and attention to detail. When someone trusts me with a memorial commission, I feel the weight of that trust. I do not take it lightly. You will never feel rushed. You will never feel like just another order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a memorial ashes sculpture cost?

Every commission is priced individually based on the complexity of the design, the size of the piece, and the chosen finish. I am always transparent about pricing before any work begins. Get in touch for a no-obligation quote.

How long does it take?

From initial conversation to delivery, most memorial commissions take two to four weeks. If you have a specific deadline, let me know and I will do my best to accommodate it.

Can I include ashes from more than one person or pet?

Yes. The compartment can be designed to hold ashes from multiple sources if that is what you would like.

What if I am not happy with the design?

We revise the design until you are completely happy. Nothing is printed until you have given your approval. Your satisfaction — and your peace of mind — is the priority.
