Custom 3D Printed Animal Busts — The Complete Guide

From breed selection to luxury finishes — everything you need to know about commissioning a bespoke 3D printed animal bust.

By Gary Fitzwater·

A custom 3D printed animal bust is one of the most unique and personal gifts you can give — or keep for yourself. Whether it's a beloved family pet, a favourite breed or a memorial tribute to a dog you've lost, a high-quality 3D printed bust captures character, personality and presence in a way that photographs simply cannot.

At 3D Scotsman, we've created hundreds of custom animal busts for customers across Scotland and the UK. This guide covers everything you need to know — from how the process works to choosing the right finish for your home.

How Custom 3D Printed Animal Busts Are Made

Our animal busts begin as highly detailed digital sculptures, created using professional 3D modelling software. Each breed is sculpted to capture the distinctive features that make that dog recognisable — the jowls of a Bulldog, the alert ears of a German Shepherd, the flowing coat of a Golden Retriever.

Once the digital model is finalised, it's printed using high-resolution FDM or resin technology depending on the size and detail required. The raw print is then carefully post-processed — sanded, primed and finished to the customer's chosen specification.

Available Breeds

We currently offer 27 dog breeds including Labrador, Golden Retriever, French Bulldog, English Bulldog, German Shepherd, Cocker Spaniel, Dachshund, Pug, Border Collie, Boxer, Dobermann, Rottweiler, Husky, Dalmatian, Great Dane, Beagle, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier, Chihuahua, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Springer Spaniel, Weimaraner, Greyhound, Whippet, Schnauzer, Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Don't see your breed? Get in touch — we regularly add new breeds and can often accommodate custom requests for breeds not currently in our catalogue.

Luxury Finish Options

The finish transforms a 3D print from a plastic object into a premium decorative piece. Our current finish options include: Classic Matte (clean, contemporary look), High Gloss (striking and bold), Antique Bronze (warm, heritage feel), Polished Chrome (modern and dramatic), Stone Effect (natural, sculptural quality), Brushed Gold (luxurious and warm) and Custom Painted (hand-painted to your specification).

Each finish is applied by hand and inspected before dispatch. We take finishing seriously — it's what separates a premium product from a basic print.

The Rocky Base with Name Plaque

Every bust is mounted on our signature Rocky Base — a textured stone-effect plinth that gives the piece a gallery-quality presentation. The base includes a personalised name plaque, making it the perfect memorial or gift.

The name plaque can be engraved with your pet's name, dates, or a short personal message. It's a small detail that makes an enormous difference to the finished piece.

Sizes: Medium and Large

Our busts are available in two sizes. The Medium bust is ideal for shelves, mantelpieces and desks — substantial enough to make an impression without dominating the space. The Large bust is a statement piece — commanding, detailed and designed to be the centrepiece of a room.

Both sizes are available in all breeds and all finish options. If you're unsure which size is right for your space, get in touch and we'll help you decide.

Perfect For: Gifts, Memorials and Home Décor

Custom animal busts make exceptional gifts for dog lovers, pet owners and anyone who appreciates unique, handcrafted décor. They're particularly meaningful as memorial pieces — a lasting tribute to a beloved pet that can be displayed with pride.

They also work beautifully as home décor in their own right. A bronze Greyhound on a bookshelf, a chrome French Bulldog on a desk, a stone-effect Labrador by the fireplace — these are pieces that start conversations and bring character to any room.
